Foltz, Fred and Lydia (Woldt)

Hesper Twp. was the home of Fred William and Lydia (Woldt) Foltz. Fred (1867-1945) was the son of John and Bertha (Sellman) Foltz and was one of 15 children. He was born on the farm where he raised his own family.

Fred was a large man, standing about 6 ft. 4 in. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Hesper, IA. Fred loved his 24 grandchildren. He called all of his grandsons “Mannie” and his grandaughters “Dollie.”

Fred married Lydia (Woldt) in 1893. Lydia, oldest daughter of Gotthilf and Julie Woldt, was baptized and confirmed at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. She was a small quiet, polite lady.

Fred and Lydia raised their 7 children on the Foltz Farm. Henry, the oldest son, married Clara Anderson. They became the parents of Lloyd, Ervin, Ray, Warren, Dean, Norman, Helen, Doris, and Eunice. Henry and Clara farmed and he also worked as a carpenter. Hilda married William Erickson of Burr Oak. They were farmers on the Erickson family farm. Hilda was trained as a teacher, painter, and a musician. They had 2 daughters, Marcella and Phyllis. Pearl married Albert Schaffer, a farmer from Greene, IA. Their family was Ruth, Esther, Jewel, Bert, and Fred. Fredrick married Jennie Hulquist. Their children were Ruth and Forest. They lived in Decorah and Chicago. Fred farmed and worked in sales. Earl became a farmer. He lived on the home Foltz farm all his life except for a few years when he was in Chicago. Earl married Ann Hulquist and had a daughter, Thelma. Later Earl married Lillie Quandahl. Their children were Leon, Shirley, and Lois. Esther trained as a teacher. She lived in Chicago and later New York. She married Harley Magee, a journalist. They had one son, Neil. Stella married Paul Reed and moved to Burr Oak. They had one daughter

Pauline. Later Stella married Clyde Halse and then Cyril Herald. Stella trained and became a cosmetologist. She owned her own business in Gladbrook, IA.

Fred and Lydia lived on their Hesper Twp. farm for 48 years. Then they moved to East Water Street in Decorah. They are remembered as hard-working farmers, second generation Germans, and good neighbors.

Ford, Michael and Julie (Cline)

Julie Ann was born to Robert and Vernetta (Bolson) Cline at Decorah, IA. She was baptized at Decorah Lutheran and confirmed there 29 Oct 1978 by Pastor Alden Hovda and Rolf Brende. She also attended Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She attended the Decorah Community Schools and graduated from Thomas Roberts High School in 1981. Julie participated in softball, was a wrestling cheerleader, member of Science Club, F.F.A. president, and a Senior homecoming attendant. She was active in many areas of 4-H and enjoyed showing Jersey cattle at the Winneshiek Co. and State fairs. She was a participant in both 4-H and F.F.A. dairy judging teams. She reigned as the Winneshiek Co. Dairy Princess in 1981 and the Iowa Jersey Princess in 1982. While growing up some of her favorite activities were being with friends, horseback riding, roller skating, and dancing. She graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, IA with a B.S. in Dairy Science in 1986. While at the university she was active in Science Club and Rodeo Club.

Julie worked at the following places: Cline’s Hilltop Jersey Farm, Matter’s Ballroom, Winneshiek Co. Extension Office, nanny in Omaha, NE, Helzberg Diamonds, J.C. Penny’s jewelry dept., Paragon Party Sales, Tupperware as a consultant (1988-present), and at the Distributorship Office (1994-present).
